AC/DC — «Back in black» на гитаре.

Как играть «Back in black» на гитаре.

«Back in black»

AC/DC — Back in Black

\»Back in Black\» is the title track from AC/DC’s seventh studio album, released in 1980.

Story behind the song

The album and the song were dedicated to AC/DC’s vocalist Bon Scott, who died on February 19, 1980, after a heavy drinking night. Though the band’s members were crushed by the loss of their friend and thought of breaking up, they finally agreed to carry on with a new singer, because after speaking with Scott’s parents, they decided that Bon wouldn’t want the band to break up. Two days after Scott’s funeral, guitarists Angus and Malcolm Young resumed working on new riffs. Angus stated that getting back to work distracted them from the grief. [1]

When Geordie vocalist Brian Johnson was invited to the audition, he wasn’t immediately interested. Johnson recalled that someone phoned up and asked him to join, but he answered, \»Nah, I’ve been bitten before.\» Brian had three Top 10 hits with Geordie, and after three years Geordie were as broke as when they started. Johnson just said that he wouldn’t do this again, as he was away from home all the time, missed his daughters growing up. But then he got curious and thought, \»Well, what’s the harm in trying out?\» [1]

The band got the idea for the title before writing any of the songs, as Angus Young decided that their first album without Scott should be called \»Back in Black\» in tribute, so they wrote this song around that phrase. [2]

They didn’t want the song to be mourning, as the title track was supposed to carry the spirit of their fallen friend. [2]

Brian Johnson told that when the band asked him to write the lyrics, which shouldn’t be morbid, the song had to be for Scott, and it had to be a celebration. So Brian just wrote what came into his head, which at the time seemed like mumbo-jumbo: \»Nine lives. Cats eyes. Abusing every one of them and running wild.\» Johnson added, \»The boys got it though. They saw Bon’s life in that lyric.\»

Malcolm Young developed the main guitar riff a long time before. Through the years, he often played it as a warm-up exercise. [2]

Angus Young recalled, \»Malcolm asked me if this riff he had was too funky. And I said, ‘Well, if you’re gonna discard it, give it to me!’\» [3]

The song was ranked #190 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. [3]

Gear and settings

The recording sessions for the album were held at Chris Blackwell’s Compass Point Studios in Nassau, the Bahamas, with producer Robert John \»Mutt\» Lange and engineer Tony Platt. [4]

The Compass Point control room was equipped with a 48–channel MCI console, 24–track MCI tape machine and monitors comprising Tannoy Red drivers inside Lockwood cabinets, as well as a then-standard array of outboard gear and a wide selection of microphones. [4]

Guitars

Angus Young

Angus Young is a well-known endorser of Gibson SGs. For the recording sessions, he used his 1970/71 Gibson SG Standard, which he bought in 1971 when he was 16 years old. Initially, this guitar had a walnut finish, Lyre Maestro tremolo bridge, and two PAF humbuckers. But in 1978, the tremolo bridge was replaced leaving scratch marks and screw holes in the body. Though it’s unclear if the neck pickup cover was removed or if the original PAF was replaced with a different pickup. Angus revealed in 2014 that this guitar was used for all of the AC/DC records. [5]

Malcolm Young

Malcolm Young used 1959 Gretsch White Falcon. [6]

Cliff Williams

There’s no precise information about the exact bass model used for the recording. Cliff Williams recalled that he often used Music Man basses, calling them \»a tremendous workhorse of a bass.\» [7] \nThough for the live performances during these years, he also used a Fender Precision bass. In the official music video, he played a Gibson Thunderbird Non-Reverse Bass.

Amps and effects

Tony Platt revealed that for every song on the album, they used different combinations of amp heads and cabs.

Angus Young

Tony Platt stated that for the recording of the album, several Marshall 50W and 100W heads with appropriate cabs were used. He joked that for the recreation of the exact sound, \»we’ll need a Marshall head, we’ll need a Marshall 4×12, we’ll need a Gibson SG, and we’ll need Angus.\» Tony also revealed that Angus used a Schaffer-Vega Diversity System for solos on the album. [4] SVDS consists of a compressor and a clean boost.

Angus mainly preferred Marshall JTM45 and 1959 Marshall SLP 100 heads. [6]

Malcolm Young

Malcolm Young in addition to previously named amps also used Marshall Super Bass. [6]

Cliff Williams

Tony Platt recalled that an Ampeg Portaflex amp (most probably B-15N) and a Demeter tube Di box were used for the recording of the bass lines. [4]

Amp settings

Angus and Malcolm have both stated in interviews that very little or no pre-gain was used on the amps and the distortion comes from a heavier attack on the strings.

Techniques

\»Back in Black\» is well-known for its main riff, which is based on power chords with the addition of pull-offs, bends, and releases. The rhythm guitar part is mostly based on power chords.

Song breakdown

The song has the following structure:

The intro starts with several muted strums, followed by the main riff, which contains a few tricky licks that may require some practicing. The first one is a blues-based lick across multiple strings, which requires accurate alternate picking to play cleanly. [8]

The second lick is a combination of large stretches and shifts. It is especially hard to master if you don’t have a good reach. Try to keep your thumb lightly placed in the middle of the back of the neck to support your fingers. Grip the neck as lightly as possible; it will allow you to lift your fingers up quickly during the fast shifts. [8]

The opening riff is also used in the verses.

The chorus riff is built on a series of simple power chords. Though as those chords change quickly, you may need to develop good muscle memory before playing it at full speed. [8]

The solos in the song are blues-based and contain many bends and releases, vibratos, fast hammer-on/pull-off sequences, and melodic phrases. [8]

To learn the solos more quickly, break them down into phrases. That will help you to catch the musical texture of each phrase, so when you put them together, you will be able to play flawlessly without thinking about it. [8]

The other riff of the song appears in the bridge and involves fast pull-offs, cross string picking, and large stretches. [8]

The song ends with an outro in a form of fading solo.
